CSA March Board and Committee Meetings Update

he 2022 bull sale season is complete and it was a very busy time for Simmental breeders as well as the service staff who assist in marketing the bulls to new buyers around the world. I was able to attend several sales and the acceptance of top quality bulls was excellent, making Simmental the envy of the 2022 bull sale run. It was another successful year for Simmental sales once again Simmental breeders enjoyed some of the highlights of all breeds, especially when we consider the tight feed supplies in Western Canada. Not all bulls sold in every sale of any breed and this should serve as a reminder that overall, we as a seed-stock sector have reached a saturation point relative to the size of the commercial cowherd in Canada. Simmental genetics have enjoyed wide spread acceptance in many herds but we need to be mindful that there is a limit to the number of bulls that any one breed, including Simmental, can successfully market. Congratulations goes out to all the breeders, sales managers and sales staff that marketed one of the largest number of Simmental bulls ever in Canada for a very strong average! In the midst of the bull sales, CSA staff and directors were also focused on the CSA Board and Committee meetings, as well as joining the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation (FCSF) directors for their board meeting. These meetings were held March 20th to 22nd in Calgary and is always a busy time as we report on the progress made since our fall meetings, discuss new business and plan for our summer and fall events. This was an especially important set of meetings for our board and committees as they were the first face to face meetings that included all CSA directors in 2 years. The meetings began with the FCSF board meeting and we discussed planning for the 2022 FCSF auction that will be held July 23rd following the CSA Annual General Meeting in Portage LaPrairie, Manitoba. It was confirmed that Everett Olson (Downhill Simmentals) will donate a bred heifer for this year’s auction and we thank him for his generosity! The FCSF board of directors also decided to support 5 individuals who will be attending the American Simmental Association SimSTYLE Conference in Oklahoma City in June. This funding will be matched by the CSA. The CSA Promotion committee also met and on the agenda was a review of the Simmental Country and Commercial Country magazines. We are always looking for ways to improve production and content in our magazines while being mindful of efficiency and the bottom line financially. The 2022 Simmental Award of Excellence (AOE) show recognition program was reviewed and we will be working with the Provincial Simmental Associations to streamline and improve the program in some key areas. With the overlap of some shows sharing the same dates in Ontario it was decided to allow additional qualifying 4

shows to be included however an animal cannot show in two events on the same day. The Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) approved Simmental RFID tag has been a great success, and the tag manufacturers have been working to keep up with demand despite supply chain limitations. Be sure to order your tags well in advance of when you need them. The Breed Improvement Committee (BIC) meeting then followed later on Monday with discussion around computer and registry system processes and ways we can provide better service to the CSA membership. The development of the Canadian Beef Improvement Network (CBIN) is progressing well and a new CBBC board of directors is guiding the process along with the managers of several breed associations. Lab turnaround times for parentage and DNA sample processing did slow somewhat through the first 3 months of 2022 however most results were received in time for the various bull sales. DNA rebates are bring applied in two options to THE members and complete details are found in the last few editions of the CSA e-News and on our website. The CSA Board of Director’s meeting wrapped up the three day session and included reporting and vetting of the previous day’s committee discussions and their recommendations. In addition to that, the YCSA report was given and highlighted the plans they have been making towards the 2022 National Classic in Manitoba. To say that YCSA members across the country are excited to be back to live summers shows is an understatement, and Crystal Fisk is working with the National and Provincial YCSA boards in the planning process. Nominations have closed for the three positions of CSA director and Shane Williams will return for a second term as the director from Ontario. We welcome new directors Barclay Smith from Alberta and Randy Noble from Saskatchewan. They will assume their new responsibilities at the CSA AGM in Manitoba when retiring directors Marlin LeBlanc and Roger Deeg will have completed their terms. While there will be no elections for CSA directors, the CSA is proposing two by-law amendments that will be voted on through our mail-in ballot process. One ballot is to revise the Purebred status for Simmental males, and the second is to to add electronic voting as an option to our current mail-in process. Watch the mail for your ballot package and remember to follow the instructions in order to avoid spoiling your ballots. DNA is another example as DNA is not used to compare animals within a contemporary group, rather the presence/absence of specific SNP markers within an animal’s genetic code indicate the presence/absence DNA for various traits. We do not compare animals within a contemporary group for if they have more or less DNA.

EPD

SUBSCRIPTION FORM

EPD are published on all animals that are in the pedigree data sent to the evaluation. This includes both THE and non THE animals. EPD for non-THE animals will generally have lower accuracy values, meaning there is less information included in

the EPD. THE animals will tend to have higher accuracy values, indicating the inclusion of more data in the calculation of the EPD. This is due to the inclusion of performance data in addition to pedigree and DNA information. Once a calf is reported to the CSA, the pedigree data will be sent in the next evaluation. In the case where a calf only has pedigree information included (non-THE with no DNA testing) then the resulting EPD are simply the average of the sire and dam. If there is performance data from a THE herd such as a birth weight reported, then that information will be included in the EPD. As more data is added it will be included in the genetic evaluation. Generally, performance data will impact the EPD within 2 weeks of being reported to the association. DNA is included once the high-density testing is completed at the lab and results are reported back to the CSA. Hopefully this article has helped to explain what data is included in EPD calculations and the timeframes. All data is useful and you as a member can expect to see the data you submit, reflected in the genetic evaluation of the animal in some way.

I thank the Ontario board for their endorsement as Ontario director representative. I am committed to the breed and look forward to continuing in the role on the CSA board to help strengthen and grow the breed. As public events get back on track, I look forward to fellowship with breeders and the Simmental fraternity. I, along with my wife Joanne, have been breeding Simmental cattle for over 25 years. We operate Jetstream Livestock in East Garafraxa, Ontario. The herd consists of about 80 purebred mother cows along with a modest grain production operation. Both our sons are passionate about the agriculture industry and they support us in our farming enterprise. It’s a group effort as Joanne and I both have fulltime employment off the farm. I am employed as a Crop Advisor and Agronomy Team Leader at Holmes Agro, a crop input and supply company based in Orangeville, Ontario. We were founding members of The Futures One Simmental sale which will host the 12th edition this fall. The sales name was selected to reflect passion about the Simmental breed. I believe we as breeders nation wide have a high end, diverse product to offer the marketplace. Be it fullblood, red, black or percentage Simmental cattle, the breed benefits the many facets of the Canadian cattle industry. Striving for quality within our diversity will continue to make the breed strong in the “Future”, together as “One”.

Randy Noble grew up on the family farm Northeast of Lloydminster where he and his family reside today. Randy’s parents had registered cattle in the 1970’s. In the early 80’s, Randy and his 3 brothers started Black Gold Simmental. Black Gold Simmental continues to be a Noble family operation with a cow herd of 280 Fullblood and Purebred cows. The younger generation has rejuvenated our passion for the Simmental breed and raising high quality cattle. We enjoy participating in cattle shows and we host an annual female sale in October and Bull Sale in March.

Alberta --- Barclay Smith --- ELECTED BY ACCLAMATION

Hello, my name is Barclay Smith and I am a part of SIBL Simmentals. SIBL Simmentals was established in 1994 with the purchase of one bred heifer from the Northern Image sale at Farmfair. My beginning in purebred Simmentals began in the fall of 1993 with the purchase of a 4-H heifer that was purebred Simmental. My junior membership was established as CLAY Simmentals that fall. Over the past almost 30 years we have raised fullblood, fleckvieh and red and black Simmental cattle. After my return from college and beginning a career in the livestock feed industry, we increased our focus on raising bulls and expanding our cowherd. Our herd grew slowly over the next number of years to breeding approximately 85 females in the spring of 2018. However this number was not sustainable with a young family and full time off farm careers. The decision was made to sell half of our female base later that fall. That sale was also the dispersal of our fleckvieh females. Over the last 20 years I spent time as a 4-H leader, worked with some very outstanding Simmental breeders and have gained a great deal of knowledge from some of the most respected breeders. I have been involved with the ASA (Alberta Simmental Association) as a director twice, most recently completing my second consecutive term. I am presently the Alberta President. During the past 4 years I have been the Simmental breed rep for Farmfair, as well as the director for the Barrhead Ag Society Cattle show (15+ years), which is now known as the Barrhead Beef Bash. I changed careers in 2010 and have been employed with AFSC (Agriculture Financial Services Corporation). During my time with AFSC I have been in a leadership role for most of 12 years covering various areas of the business. From lending to insurance and risk management and a term role as the manager for the Livestock Price Insurance program which covered the western provinces. The livestock industry is my passion and I believe the experience I have in various aspects of the industry will be an asset to the CSA board. Being part of a national board that is so committed to the development of our youth and improving a breed that continues to grow and attract commercial cattle producers on a large scale will be a great opportunity. I look forward to representing the province of Alberta and its breeders at the National level.

n a complété la saison 2022 des ventes de taureaux, les éleveurs Simmental ont été très occupés, de même que le personnel impliqué qui a contribué à la vente des taureaux aux acheteurs de partout dans le monde. J’ai été en mesure d’être présent à plusieurs ventes et je peux vous affirmer que les meilleurs taureaux étaient très appréciés, confirmant encore une fois l’excellente réputation de la race Simmental. De nouveau, ce fut une autre année très réussie, alors que les éleveurs Simmental ont attiré l’attention parmi toutes les races, en dépit du contexte de disponibilité restreinte d’aliments du bétail dans l’Ouest Canadien. Les taureaux des différentes races offerts dans les ventes n’ont pas tous été vendus, ce qui devrait nous servir de rappel à l’effet que le secteur des sélectionneurs de race pure a atteint un niveau relatif de saturation, en proportion de la taille du cheptel commercial du Canada. La génétique Simmental est toujours bien acceptée dans plusieurs troupeaux, toutefois on doit garder à l’esprit qu’il y a une limite en termes du nombre de taureaux de toutes races, incluant les Simmental, qui peut être commercialisé avec succès. Félicitations à tous les éleveurs, les gérants des ventes et leur personnel, lesquels ont contribué à la vente d’un des plus importants nombres de taureaux jamais vendus au Canada, avec un prix moyen très élevé. Au cours de la période des ventes de taureaux, le personnel de l’ASC et les administrateurs se sont affairés aux réunions du Conseil d’administration et des comités de l’ASC, en plus de se joindre aux administrateurs de la Fondation des amis de la race Simmental (« FCSF ») lors de la tenue de leur Conseil d’administration. Ces réunions se sont tenues du 20 au 22 mars à Calgary et, comme d’habitude, cela a été une période très intense tandis qu’on faisait le point sur nos progrès effectués depuis nos réunions de l’automne, en plus de discuter de nouveaux sujets et de planifier les activités à venir pour l’été et l’automne. Toutes ces réunions revêtaient un caractère particulier pour notre Conseil d’administration et nos comités, puisque c’était la première fois en deux ans que tous les administrateurs étaient présents en personne.

La première réunion fut celle du Conseil d’administration de la Fondation (“FCSF”), alors que nous avons planifié l’encan 2022 de la Fondation, lequel se tiendra le 23 juillet prochain, à Portage La Paririe au Manitoba, immédiatement après l’Assemblée Générale annuelle de l’ASC. Nous avons notamment confirmé qu’une taure gestante allait être donnée pour l’encan de cette année par Everett Olson (Downhill Simmentals), et nous le remercions sincèrement pour sa générosité ! Le Conseil d’administration de la Fondation a également accepté de supporter la participation de cinq personnes qui assisteront à la Conférence SimSTYLE organisée par l’Association Américaine Simmental en juin prochain à Oklahoma City. L’ASC appuiera ces participants avec un financement équivalent. Le comité de promotion de l’ASC s’est aussi réuni, avec comme sujet à l’ordre du jour une analyse des revues Simmental Country et Commercial Country. Nous recherchons toujours de nouvelles façons de produire et d’améliorer le contenu de nos revues, tout en ayant bien à l’esprit un souci d’efficacité et de rentabilité. Nous avons également revu le programme de reconnaissance des expositions “Prix d’excellence Simmental 2022”, et nous allons travailler avec les associations provinciales Simmental afin de simplifier et d’améliorer certains importants aspects du programme. Compte tenu que certaines expositions ont lieu le même jour en Ontario, il fut décidé d’accepter un plus grand nombre d’expositions reconnues, toutefois un animal ne peut pas compétitionner dans deux évènements la même journée. L’utilisation des étiquettes électroniques d’oreille Simmental de l’ACIB a connu un grand succès, tandis que les fabricants s’affairaient à répondre à la demande en dépit de restrictions au niveau de la chaine d’approvisionnement. Assurez-vous de commander bien à l’avance vos étiquettes d’oreille. La réunion du comité d’amélioration de la race s’est ensuite tenue le lundi, avec des discussions touchant les processus d’enregistrement et des systèmes informatiques, ainsi que sur des manières de fournir de meilleurs services aux membres. Le développement du Réseau Canadien d’Amélioration du Boeuf (“CBIN”) avance rondement, sous la gouverne d’une nouveau

Conseil d’administration du « CBBC » et des directeurs généraux de plusieurs associations de race. Au cours des trois premiers mois de 2022, le temps de traitement au laboratoire des analyses de parenté et d’ADN s’est accru légèrement, toutefois la plupart des résultats ont été reçus à temps pour les diverses ventes de taureaux. Des rabais sur les analyses d’ADN sont appliqués de deux manières aux membres inscrits au “THE”, tous les détails sont disponibles dans le dernier bulletin « CSA e-News », ainsi que sur notre site internet. La réunion du Conseil d’administration de l’ASC s’est tenue à la fin de la session de trois jours, alors que les administrateurs ont pris connaissance des discussions des divers comités et qu’ils ont validé leurs recommandations. De plus, ils ont reçu le rapport des jeunes éleveurs “YCSA”, lequel présentait les plans prévus pour la Classique Nationale 2022 au Manitoba. Les membres des “YCSA” sont très excités de pouvoir être de retour avec les expositions de l’été, et Crystal Fisk travaille à la planification de cette activité en collaboration avec les Conseils d’administration provinciaux et nationaux des « YCSA ». Les mises en candidature aux trois postes d’administrateurs de l’ASC sont fermées, alors que Shane Williams sera de retour pour un second mandat de représentant de l’Ontario. Nous souhaitons le bienvenu aux deux nouveaux administrateurs, soit Barclay

Smith de l’Alberta et Randy Noble de la Saskatchewan. Ils pourront assumer leurs nouvelles responsabilités lors de l’AGA de l’ASC au Manitoba, lorsque les deux administrateurs sortants Marlin LeBlanc et Roger Deeg auront terminé leurs mandats. Bien qu’il n’y ait pas d’élection aux postes d’administrateurs de l’ASC, deux projets d’amendements aux statuts de l’ASC seront proposés, lesquels seront soumis au vote via un processus de vote postal. Herd Health on Pasture

oon will be the time to get cattle ready for pasture and there are always several things we must consider and have in order before they go out. Some of these things are especially critical if they are going to a brand new pasture. Several things always enter my mind. Have the pastures been checked for everything from fence lines, to the potential for noxious weeds or other toxins such as old batteries from electric fencers. If there’s an old dump area or burrow pit on the premises or old yard sites with everything from garages with toxic compounds to open bored water wells. All could pose danger in the impending grazing season and are worth cleaning up. Also if grass has just started cattle will turn to consuming noxious weeds and other things they may not if the growth of grass is lush. Before loading cattle for herding down the road one must give necessary vaccines for general health such as the clostridial diseases. Use a multivalent vaccine that covers as many of the clostridial organisms as you can. One never knows when decades old clostridial spores are consumed. Anthrax should be thought about the same way if it is in your area and just before turnout to pasture in Spring is the ideal time to vaccinate for these diseases. Calves need to be up to date in clostridial, histophilus and the respiratory pathogens for coverage. Vaccinate cows for clostridial and the reproductive pathogens especially IBR and BVD to protect against the main infectious causes of reproductive failure. Make sure you have the bulls covered as well and the best time to administer these is when they are handled for semen testing just before breeding and often coinciding with turnout to pasture. It pays to do a very thorough scan of health before turning out to pasture. Keep in mind cattle are harder to observe, harder to catch and may need to travel well to water, mineral stations and traverse rugged terrain in some cases. They must be able to move well. Flies etc will be a problem later into the summer so best to have a plan to administer treatment or preventative measures in the heat of the summer when flies are at their worst. Make sure cattle are relatively free of internal parasites (worms) so they won’t contaminate pastures with worm eggs the minute they begin grazing. I would suggest pulling out pairs not worthy of going and take a little extra care with treatment and medical attention. This may include but not limited to bad udders (prone to mastitis), bad eyes (prone to pinkeye or cancer eye), thin cows prone to a variety of medical problems. Bad footed cattle or those lame are likely to worsen their condition and lame sore cattle don’t move well, lose weight and as a result don’t milk well for their calf. They need their feet attended to for sole abscesses, cracks, corns and a myriad of other problems. If chronically lame they may need to be left back as well. If you find a dead cow, calf or bull I would suggest removing for an autopsy off site. Especially for anthrax or clostridial diseases, we don’t want the carcass opened exposing the area to numerous spores risking other cattle. Always think of the rest of the herd with contagious 12

organisms. Any animals with open wounds need to be left until they have fully healed to avoid fly strike. Lumps, bumps such as abscesses or injuries should again be healed before going to pasture. Be cognizant of problems like weeping eyes, this might be the start of a cancerous eye and could get much much worse by the end of the grazing season. Lumps on the jaw may lead to lumpy jaw, attending to early may give much more favorable results than waiting until the condition becomes chronic and the jaw has deviated from the lumpy jaw making mastication almost impossible. Calves may have everything from umbilical abscesses or hernias to chronic respiratory issues and you don’t want to turn anything out that has potential to die or need further treatment at pasture. With calves, think of the gain potential on pasture so implanting may be a definite option with commercial cattle. With fly control for the whole group there are several options readily available. From fly tags, to pour on products, to oilers that dispense insecticide. There is also a product which when fed mixed in with the minerals provides a larvicidal effect to the fly larvae in the dung patties. These products, either used individually or sometimes used in tandem, can do a great job at controlling lice as long as the timing is right. We want to apply product as ideal as possible keeping in mind resistance could be developing and most products are not residual so don’t stick around long. May be good with flies for example to wait until you see the higher numbers on the animal (we usually say 200 plus flies as the threshold). Watch the breeding bulls as they will have the highest levels generally. Even if you have oilers at pasture best to pulse medicate when the cattle are becoming infected. You want to always be cognizant of the environment when treating and try to keep the dung beetle population healthy as they also consume fly larvae in the cow patties. Lots to think about before pasture but looking after these things will hopefully lead to a trouble free pasture season where cattle gain well, breed well with good conception rates, no bull issues and have lots of grass. Make sure cattle are well identified with Dangle tags, RFID tags and even brands if that is required. Many producers are incorporating dart guns in treatment at pasture. Make sure you are pretty confident in the diagnosis and consult with your veterinarian on which product is the most appropriate. There is no doubt treatment comes quicker and less stress on the cattle when a dart gun is employed. This is especially true if treating the herd bull. Lets hope this summer there is not the extreme temperatures where we need to worry about hyperthermia at pasture. Remember with the grass pastured low last year in most cases and the feed shortage over the winter, there will be a tendency to turn cattle out quicker so they will get into new growth of almost anything. Have a good surveillance of the pastures before turning cattle out is always a very wise move.

Canadian Simmental Association 2022 Proposed By-law Change At its November meetings the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Board of Directors decided that due to overwhelming support from the CSA membership, combined with numerous requests to revisit the 2021 proposed by-law change, that it was prudent to conduct another vote on this amendment in 2022. As a result the CSA is again proposing the amendment to its by-laws that would recognize a 7/8 male as a Purebred Simmental changing the current requirement of 15/16 for a Simmental male to attain Purebred status. This change was initially proposed in 2021 and after several years of discussion by the CSA board as well as its Breed Improvement Committee, combined with many requests from CSA members. Last year’s vote fell just short of the required 2/3 majority with 62 percent of members voting in favor however it is clear that the majority of CSA members want this change. Reasons for this amendment: • To more properly recognize the genetic contribution of 7/8 males at an equal level to 7/8 females which have been recognized as Purebreds since 1970.

• The change of Purebred status will facilitate the adjustment to the CSA upgrade table and recognize progeny born from the mating of a 7/8 Simmental male to a ½ Simmental female as a ¾ blood calf.

• This was originally part of the 2013 by-law and upgrading table changes that received unanimous

support through a CSA membership vote held at its Annual General Meeting. While all the other revisions to the upgrading table were accepted by Agriculture and Agrifood Canada (AAFC), this specific mating outcome was not approved and the CSA is currently required to recognize the calves from this mating as a 1/2 blood animal. A 7/8 Simmental female mated to a ½ blood male is however recognized as a ¾ blood calf with the reasoning given to us that a 7/8 female is recognized as a Purebred while as stated above, a 7/8 male currently is not.

It is important to note that:

• This change will not result in the Canadian Simmental upgrade table being the same as the American

Simmental upgrade table as the American process has some distinct differences, including recognizing Simmental animals at less than ½ blood status.

• These changes will be voted on by active CSA members who are in good standing through a mail-in ballot process in the spring of 2022.

• Support by a 2/3 majority of the vote is still required to move to the next step of sending the revisions to AAFC for final approval from the Federal Minister of Agriculture.

• This change in no way affects the Canadian Simmental Fullblood registry nor does it make any changes to Fullblood status or the calculations within our genetic evaluation.

• Purebred 15/16 status will continue to be calculated and displayed to identify the level of purity, as well as to

facilitate the process of developing a 7/8 Purebred Simmental from a recorded ¾ blood parent. This also addresses the concern of the change affecting export markets to other countries. We are confident that these by-law changes will influence the Simmental breed in Canada in a positive way as we facilitate growth for our members while allowing us to continue the Simmental breed’s contributions to the improvement of the Canadian beef cattle industry.

Voici un aperçu des explications touchant la contribution des données d’un animal sur ses ÉPD, pour des troupeaux participants ou non au programme « Total Herd Enrolment – THE » ou Enrôlement du troupeau complet. Les membres de l’ASC transmettent à l’association une foule de données sur leurs animaux. Ces données sont essentielles pour s’assurer de l’amélioration de la race et du maintien de l’intégrité des généalogies de race Simmental dans l’industrie. Toutes ces données permettent d’obtenir les évaluations génétiques nécessaires pour estimer le mérite génétique relative de chaque animal à l’intérieur de la race. Les membres posent souvent la question à savoir comment sont utilisés leurs données. Les membres de l’ASC ont fondamentalement deux options sur la manière de transmettre leurs données à la base de données de l’association. Troupeaux non-inscrits à l’enrôlement du troupeau complet Certains membres ont des troupeaux qui sont reliés avec l’ASC, toutefois ils ne sont pas inscrits au programme THE. Certaines données provenant des troupeaux non-inscrits au programme de l’enrôlement du troupeau complet sont incluses aux évaluations génétiques. Et, puisque les troupeaux non-inscrits ne sont pas obligés de transmettre les données complètes des groupes contemporains, on utilisera uniquement des données non comparatives pour le calcul des évaluations génétiques. Les données de performance ne sont donc pas utilisées car elles doivent être comparées entre les animaux si on veut employer l’information. En fait, si on ne recueille pas les données sur chacun des veaux, on peut créer un biais avec les données. Données généalogiques Des données généalogiques sont saisies dans le système de l’ASC, au fur et à mesure que les membres enregistrent des bovins. Ces données sont transférées aux évaluations génétiques et elles sont incluses au calcul des ÉPD. animaux ayant des données SNP d’ADN est alors transmise à l’évaluation, là où on téléchargera les données directement du laboratoire, lesquelles seront ensuite incluses aux calculs des EPD (les résultats des autres tests tels que pour la parenté, le caractère acère, la couleur ou d’autres défauts génétiques ne seront pas inclus dans l’évaluation des ÉPD). Troupeaux inscrits à l’enrôlement du troupeau complet (« THE ») Pour participer au programme “THE”, les membres doivent enrôler les femelles actives et soumettre les informations complètes sur tous les veaux nés dans une année. Cela permet de faire des comparaisons plus facilement et d’éviter tout biais au niveau de l’évaluation. Toutes les données provenant des troupeaux inscrits au “THE” sont incluses aux évaluations génétiques. Données généalogiques Des données généalogiques sont saisies dans le système de l’ASC, au fur et à mesure que les membres soumettent des animaux. Ces données sont transférées aux évaluations génétiques et elles sont incluses au calcul des ÉPD. Calendrier des évaluations Les évaluations génétiques de l’ASC sont effectuées chaque semaine par le centre « IGS » (« International Genetic Solutions ») et elles incluent des données provenant de plusieurs associations de race. Les données sont envoyées chaque dimanche. Il faut ensuite compter une semaine pour réaliser certaines validations, ainsi que plusieurs vérifications, avant de démarrer les ordinateurs et calculer les nouveaux ÉPD. Les ÉPD sont retournés le dimanche suivant en soirée, puis ils sont téléchargés le lundi matin sur le système de l’ASC. Si on soumet de nouvelles informations pour un animal, cela prendra donc entre une et deux semaines avant que ces informations soient incluses dans ses ÉPD. Par exemple, vous effectuez une pesée à un an le lundi à votre ferme et les poids sont entrés au système. Ces poids seront transmis à l’évaluation le dimanche (6 jours après) et les ÉPD seront retournés à la fin de la semaine suivante, puis ils seront téléchargés le lundi (soit 14 jours après la pesée). Données définitives versus comparatives Par rapport aux évaluations de l’ASC, l’une des questions les plus courantes est de savoir pourquoi certaines données provenant des troupeaux non-inscrits au « THE » sont incluses alors que d’autres en sont exclues. L’objectif du programme “THE” est d’encourager la transmission complète des données comparatives. Les données comparatives sont des informations ayant été évaluées en comparaison avec les autres sujets contemporains. Par exemple, bien que chaque veau ait son poids individuel à la naissance, ce poids à la naissance est comparé comme étant soit plus lourd ou plus léger que les autres veaux dans le même groupe. Avec ce type d’information, il est important de soumettre les données du groupe complet, si on veut pouvoir faire des comparaisons valides. Les données définitives sont des informations servant à relier des animaux à d’autres animaux, ou de les comparer directement avec la population. Leur utilité n’est pas dépendante de comparaisons effectuées à l’intérieur d’un groupe contemporain. Les généalogies sont de bons exemples, lesquelles appartiennent à des animaux donnés et qui sont utilisés pour relier des informations et démontrer un certain niveau de connexion, mais sans pour autant les comparer (un animal n’a pas plus ou moins de généalogie qu’un

autre). L’ADN est un autre exemple car l’ADN n’est pas employé pour comparer des animaux dans un groupe contemporain, mais plutôt la présence ou l’absence de marqueurs SNP spécifiques DNA à l’intérieur du code génétique d’un animal indique la présence ou l’absence d’ADN pour certains caractères. Nous ne comparons pas des animaux dans un groupe contemporain pour savoir s’ils ont plus ou moins d’ADN. EPD Des ÉPD sont publiés pour tous les animaux possédant des données généalogiques qui sont transmises au calcul des évaluations génétiques. Ceux-là incluent tous les animaux inscrits ou non au programme « THE ». En général, les ÉPD des animaux non-inscrits au “THE” ont des valeurs de précision moins élevées, car il y a moins d’informations incluses dans le calcul de l’ÉPD. Les animaux inscrits au “THE” auront tendance à avoir des valeurs plus élevées de précision, ce qui indique que davantage de données ont été inclues au calcul des ÉPD. En fait, des données de performance ont été utilisées, en plus des données généalogiques et provenant de l’ADN. Dès qu’un veau est enregistré avec l’ASC, ses données généalogiques seront transmises pour la prochaine évaluation. Dans le cas des veaux ne possédant qu’une information généalogique (c’est-à-dire non-inscrits au “THE” et sans posséder d’information sur l’ADN), les ÉPD ainsi calculés seront tout simplement le résultat de la moyenne du père et de la mère. S.il y une donnée de performance provenant d’un troupeau inscrit au “THE”, telle qu’une donnée de poids à la naissance, cette information sera alors incluse dans le calcul de l’ÉPD. Au fur et à mesure qu’il y a plus de données ajoutées, celles-là seront incluses dans les évaluations génétiques. En général, les données de performance auront un effet sur l’ÉPD en-dedans de deux semaines depuis le moment où les données ont été transmises à l’association. L’information sur l’ADN est incluse une fois que l’analyse de haute densité est complétée par le laboratoire et que les résultats ont été rapportés à l’ASC. J’espère que cet article vous a aidé à mieux comprendre comment les ÉPD sont calculés et quels sont les délais impliqués. Toutes les données sont utiles et, vous en tant qu’un membre, vous pouvez espérer que les données transmises sur un animal se reflèteront d’une manière ou l’autre dans son évaluation génétique.

PRESIDENT urges producers to get involved

Simmental cattle have come a long way in Marlin LeBlanc’s nearly 50-years of experience of producing cattle, and he feels the breed is fully capable of meeting market and social expectations in the coming years. LeBlanc, who has been raising Simmental on his southern Saskatchewan farm near Estevan since the mid-1970s, says there is a fit for all types of Simmental cattle in different production environments, and the breed has proven it is very adaptable as markets and environments change. “Going forward I believe the breed needs to work on carcass traits and feed efficiency,” says LeBlanc, who is wrapping up his term as president and director of the Canadian Simmental Association this summer. “The breed needs to produce efficient cattle with improved carcass yield and grade while at the same time having the least environmental impact.” “And the breed can do it. If we use the science — apply the science along with our production experience the breed will adapt and have a fit with changing markets and consumer expectations.” The first commercial Simmental cattle showed up on the LeBlanc farm in 1975, but it was soon after they registered their first full-blood calf and focused on purebred production. Today, Marlin and his wife Lucille owners of R Plus Simmentals raise about 550 head of red and black Simmental cows. They just had their 22nd annual bull sale on the farm this past March. The farm started out producing traditional Simmental cattle, but was one of the first in Western Canada to begin using and promoting Simmental cattle with red and black genetics. “The traditional Full Blood Simmental are good cattle

in the right environment, I can’t take anything away from them, but they didn’t work for us and weren’t suited for production in short grass prairie country for example,” says LeBlanc. “With my involvement with feedlots and auction marts I knew there was a need to change these cattle. And the red and black genetics where more efficient animals better suited to what commercial beef producers, cattle feeders and processors were looking for.” He says there was a time when mentioning Simmental, put a producer on the “no buy list” — the industry was reluctant to take them. “But now with these more efficient red and black cattle, buyers are calling looking for them,” says LeBlanc. “They are in demand — there is no trouble marketing these Simmental cattle.” He gives credit to purebred breeders who recognized the need to change and “did an excellent job in producing cattle for a changing market place.” That’s why he is confident the breed will continue to evolve to produce even more efficient, high quality cattle with a reduce environmental footprint.

Along with producing Simmental cattle, LeBlanc has also been involved with the Simmental Association since the early days. He started out as a member and later became president of the Saskatchewan Chapter of the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA). “We were just getting into the purebred Simmental business and joining the YCSA was an opportunity for us to show our cattle,” says LeBlanc. “It was an opportunity to learn about showing cattle and to be mentored by my peers.” LeBlanc recalls in 1980 custom showing cattle, of different breeds, at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, SK. Over the years he travelled across Canada and parts of the U.S. showing cattle —Denver, North and South Dakota, Ontario and Alberta events, to name a few.

In the 1990s, LeBlanc served two three-year terms as director and eventually president of the Saskatchewan Simmental Association. About 11 years ago he joined the board of the Friends of the Canadian Simmental Foundation, and continues to serve as treasurer of that organization. In 2016 he was elected to the Canadian Simmental Association board, served as treasurer for two years, and for the past two years has served as CSA president. LeBlanc says as other breeders and the provincial and national associations have been supportive of his purebred operation over the years, he felt it was important to “give back” where he could. “The Saskatchewan Association provided breeders with a great opportunities to bring the breed forward and show the beef industry our cattle,” says LeBlanc noting that one of the

roles of the Saskatchewan Simmental Association is to organize the Annual Simmental Show and Sale at Agribition. Similarly, at the national level, LeBlanc felt it was important to “do my part” to support the organization that has helped so many build careers in the beef industry. “I’ve always been interested in studying the beef industry and I felt I had something to offer in terms of helping the breed adapt and have a better fit in the market place,” says LeBlanc. “It has always been my goal to take Simmental to the top of the beef industry and make it a breed that the industry wants.” During these two terms as CSA director LeBlanc says he learned a great deal through CSA projects, along with being a member of the Canadian Beef Breeds Council about the science of breeding and raising cattle. Also during his time with Simmental associations he learned a great deal about governance and how organizations work. Through daily and weekly contact with the CSA office, he also has great appreciation for the dedication of the CSA staff in promoting the breed and supporting the breeding industry. “I really encourage people to get involved at the association level and to help keep these organizations strong,” says LeBlanc. “It is through these organizations that we are able to keep the Simmental breed moving forward. I always say it is easy to sit back and be a counter, but it is another matter to step up and be counted. “The Simmental breed has helped a lot of young people to have successful careers, and that’s often because people got involved and made decisions that aren’t always easy or popular to make. It is important for the breeding industry to not spend time looking back, we always need to be looking forward.”

As he heads into his second term as a director of the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA), Shane Williams, of south western Ontario says the current board is standing on some very broad shoulders of the past executive members who have helped guide the breed over the association’s 50 year history. Williams says retiring board members such as Marlin LeBlanc of Estevan Sask. and Roger Deeg of Strathmore, Alta., as well as other retired board members, have made a major contribution not only to the Simmental breed, but also helped many individual breeders such as himself. “I am really humbled to be in the same room as these board members,” says Williams, currently serving as CSA vice-president. He begins his second three-year term as a CSA director this July. “They have provided years of dedication to improving the breed and strengthening the association. And they have served as mentors to many breeders such as myself. Their knowledge and experience has been greatly appreciated.” Williams who owns Jet Stream Livestock along with his wife Joanne Handley at East Garafraxa, about 90 minutes north of Toronto, says it has been people such as LeBlanc, Deeg and long time CSA general manager Bruce Holmquist who make it so welcoming to be involved in the breed and part of the association. Williams first connected with the Simmental breed more than 30 years ago. As a teenager he was a member of the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA). He later attended the University of Guelph. He met Joanne Handley who came from a well-established purebred Simmental family farm and about 26 years ago they bought the farm at East Garafraxa and launched Jet Stream Livestock.

They began by raising full blood Simmental cattle and “gradually we began migrating into the red and black cattle,” says Williams. “The full bloods served us well, but the red and blacks had user friendly or customer convenience features that appeal to breeders as well as commercial beef producers.” Today Jet Stream Livestock runs about 90 head of red and black Simmental mothers that calve out in January and February. Williams says the easy management of these Simmentals works well for producers such as himself, who also work off-farm. Williams is a crop advisor for Holmes Agro based at Orangeville, Ontario.

“The herd calves early which helps with managing the spring work load around the farm as well as my offfarm career,” says Williams. He says the movement towards the red and black genetics is probably the biggest change he has seen in the breed during his decades of involvement. “Convenience factors” such as easy calving, vigorous and fast growing calves, and cows with good feet and udders, along with longevity all appeal to beef producers. Jet Stream Livestock markets breeding bulls through private treaty sales off the farm, and for the past 12 years they have joined with three other breeders to market open and bred Simmental females on the Internet. The Futures One Sale in November brings together elite genetics from Jet Stream Livestock, as well as Destiny Simmentals of Meaford, Ont., Cedar Creek Simmentals of Ennismore, Ont. and Keystone Livestock of Hately Township, QC. Williams first got involved with the Ontario Simmental Association in early 2000s, serving two three-years terms as a director. He joined the CSA board in 2019 serving on the Beef Improvement Committee and more recently as first vicepresident.

“It is just a pleasure to be involved with the Simmental fraternity,” says Williams. “Both provincially and nationally it is like being part of the Simmental family. I have learned a great deal during my time on the board. And I am really impressed with the bench strength within the CSA office itself. They are dedicated and hardworking employees who serve as breed ambassadors. “I’m hoping through my experience over the years I can make some contribution that will be of some value to Simmental breed moving forward.”

Being elected President of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) at our Annual General Meeting on March 25 is an honour. It’s a role that I do not take lightly and since joining CCA’s Board in 2010, I have seen firsthand the commitment and hard work put in by past CCA Presidents. I am proud of our organization’s rich history and will look to our past successes and how we overcame past challenges to guide our industry to new heights. On behalf of the CCA Board, tremendous gratitude goes out to Bob Lowe for his leadership and dedication over the past two years. You have led our industry through very challenging times and despite limitations on travel, you have strengthened our relationships with policymakers, Parliamentarians, and industry stakeholders for the benefit of cattle producers across the country. Thank you, Bob. I look forward to continuing to work with you over the next two years in your new roles as CCA Past President and Chair of the Public and Stakeholder Engagement (PSE) program. As CCA President, my goals are centred in my passion to leave to vibrant industry for the next generation. Being a part of a multi-generational ranching operation near Beechy, Saskatchewan, I understand and appreciate the succession challenges facing ranching and farm families, and much of my past efforts as a CCA Board Member focused on initiatives to protect and preserve our industry for the next generation. An important way to protect our industry is by being vigilant when it comes to animal health and care. An outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a very real threat to Canada’s livestock sector with a potential $50 to $60 billion financial impact to the Canadian economy. Investing in a Canadian FMD vaccine bank would help prevent catastrophic losses. We continue to advocate the Government of Canada to establish a vaccine bank of 30 million doses, consisting of 2.5 million doses each of 12 different FMD vaccine concentrates. This a key priority for Canadian beef producers to ensure economic viability in the future. Enhancements to the current suite of business risk management (BRM) programs and critical infrastructure can help cattle producers from across Canada manage risk, particularly during uncertain times. In 2021, we saw extreme drought and wildfires directly impact beef producers from British Columbia to Ontario and the consequences will be felt by the entire industry for years to come. CCA’s BRM recommendations to Government focus on helping producers make economically viable decisions and become more resilient to the climate, market, and production risks. For example, making Livestock Price Insurance (LPI) a permanent program will help producers better manage price risk and will ultimately benefit young producers, who don’t have the equity to fall back on. CCA continues to ask for LPI to be made available to cattle producers in the Maritimes as they’re currently without LPI or any similar program. Another way that LPI can be enhanced is by having the Government as partner to cost-share the premiums. This would result in higher enrollment in the program and would put cattle

producers on a level-playing field with Canadian crop producers and their American counterparts. Innovation is key factor to ensuring a strong and vibrant beef industry. We have the opportunity, and demonstrated ability, to continually improve our productivity and environmental performance, to better protect and preserve our air, water, and soil resources. To help meet our productivity and environmental goals, increases to Government core funding for research are needed. In recent years, trade has been a real success story for our industry. For the sixth straight year, export values of Canadian beef hit record highs reaching almost $5.5 billion in 2021. CCA will continue to focus efforts on securing access for Canadian beef in world markets. In recent years, we have seen improve trade through the implementation of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement, and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Partnership (CPTPP) and we strongly support the expansion of free trade. To help grow our export markets, we continue to share our priorities with the Government of Canada when it comes the current trade negotiations underway with the United Kingdom and the Association of Southeast Asian Countries as well as the benefit of exploring CPTPP expansion. While we are fortunate to have many free trade agreements that have lowered tariffs on Canadian beef, many non-tariff trade barriers remain – even in markets where agreements are in place. These trade challenges need to be addressed to ensure Canadian beef producers have equal opportunity to benefit from these negotiated agreements as their counterparts. This is the case when it comes to trade with the European Union, and we are continuing to see a growing trade imbalance with Canadian beef producers unable to have the equivalent access into this market. We are committed to working with the Government of Canada to ensure that future trade agreements establish progressive trade parameters resulting in mutual benefits and a strong trade relationship. Of course, the environment and climate change will continue to be top of mind for Government and the general public. Building on the success of Guardians of the Grasslands, Public and Stakeholder Engagement have released a new documentary titled “Too Close to Home.” With the rise of devastating and intense fire events across Canada, wildfire mitigation strategies are urgently needed. CBBC UPDATE

MAKING ADVANCEMENTS THROUGH COLLABORATION

t has already been a very busy year for the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) with significant progress being made on our efforts to collaboratively advance the development of the Canadian Beef Improvement Network (CBIN), strengthen the foundation of our organization and increase overall value for our members. With these goals in mind, collaborative leadership, improved communication and increased industry engagement continue to be our drivers for success and the first few months of 2022 have already seen considerable achievements for CBBC in these areas. The Canadian beef industry has been notorious for its segmentation and independence – this has been both an advantage and a challenge for our industry. As CBBC continues to advance the development of the CBIN a new level of collaboration has emerged. While our independent nature has built a strong foundation there is no doubt that collaboration has the potential to increase innovation, build efficiencies and improve information sharing. Achieving tangible outcomes for all segments of the beef production chain will take many leaders engaged at many levels. CBBC recognizes this and continues to expand the engagement of our members and stakeholders to ensure success for all involved. As we have outlined on several occasions, CBIN has a fourstep development plan to drive this transformational initiative forward to full operation that will unlock value across the beef production chain. The four-step plan is as follows: 1. Build the Data Foundation: Build an operational system that will standardize data collection amongst participating Breed Associations (in progress and to be completed by March 2023). 2. Facilitate Data Linkages: Develop a cross-sector genetic data hub that will facilitate linkages of genetic data to traditional production metrics. 3. Translate Data: Create the analytical resources to assist in the translation of genetic data into informed decisions that allow increased value capture from conception to consumption. 4. Drive Adoption: Advance the understanding of the value of genetic data incorporation and resource utilization across the entire beef production system. Starting at the seedstock level, we have made unprecedented progress on working collectively to improve the capture of genetic data and build efficiencies within our processes. Along with a growing number of Canadian breed associations we are collaborating to advance the first stage of development of CBIN and begin to better unlock the value of the genetic information these organizations collect. In early February, a data strategy and roadmap for development was completed and endorsed by the CBBC leadership. As a direct outcome of this strategy and in order to deliver on the first step of development for CBIN, the development of a Registry Portal is currently underway to standardize and unify the collection of genetic data across participating Canadian beef breeds. As part of the path to completion, a prototype of the CBIN Registry Portal was completed in March and we continue to move forward guided by the Roadmap for CBIN Development.

With development of the Registry Portal underway to fulfill our requirement for step one of development, we are shifting our focus down the development path to the broader industry and facilitating the data linkages which is required to unlock significant value from genetic data in all segments of beef production. While all components of development are critical for CBIN’s ultimate success, step two is the piece that has the potential to truly transform the Canadian beef industry and add value to our system. We recognize that this is no easy undertaking and will take unparalleled collaborative leadership with a diverse set of skills and experience and so we acknowledge that we must continue to expand engaged leaders and critical thinkers in the conversation. In December, CBBC held our Annual General Meeting and provided our membership and the industry with an extensive update on our activities and a plan for the year ahead. With a strong mandate and a lot of work ahead, the current Board leadership acknowledged the need for succession to build and evolve the support and engagement for CBBC and the transformational work that we are leading. As a result of this vision, several new Directors were elected to the CBBC Board. While our past Board members continue to play a strong leadership role for our organization and the entire Canadian beef industry, this transition has increased the number of engaged leaders in the conversation to advance both CBBC and CBIN. Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef The Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) was established in 2014 with a vision to bring together sustainability conversations and drive science-based continuous improvement of environmental, social, and economic sustainability of Canadian beef. Multi-stakeholder engagement, collaboration and communication are at the core of this mission. Through our membership, now over 100 members strong, we measure industry-wide sustainability performance benchmarking, set strategic improvement goals, and demonstrate progress through on-the-ground projects and initiatives.

Certifying Sustainability

Sustainable practices are recognized through the Certified Sustainable Beef Framework, a 3rd party certification. The program enables sustainable sourcing by companies interested in making sustainability progress and delivering credible claims to consumers. The program has grown considerably since 2018; 17% of the Canadian cattle herd is now raised on CRSB Certified farms and ranches. There are five processing facilities certified to the standards, and five processors audited to requirements sourcing CRSB Certified beef through the supply chain. Eight restaurants, retailers and foodservice companies are sourcing from CRSB Certified farms and ranches. Retail and food service companies want to satisfy consumer demand for responsibly raised products through certified sustainable sourcing, and to tell the story to their customers. Partnerships with companies like these tell our beef sustainability story with Canadian consumers, and show their support of the hard work done on the ground by Canadian farmers and ranchers.

The average consumer we are raising beef for looks for these assurances, as a fourth-generation farmer I believe this is an integral part of our ability to tell the story that Canadian beef farmers and ranchers are doing the right thing.”

Thinking about getting Certified?

Ranchers and farmers across Canada have been taking care of their livestock and land for generations. The Certified Sustainable Beef Framework aims to recognize and reward the commitment you make to raise cattle responsibly, encourage continuous improvement, and to share that story with Canadian consumers. The CRSB Standards include indicators that help demonstrate sustainable practices across five principles of sustainable beef as developed by the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB), an organization similar to the CRSB which works on beef sustainability globally.

The Sustainable Beef Production Standard covers beef production across cow-calf, backgrounding and feedlot operations; it is measurable, based on science and expert opinion, and addresses key concerns around the sustainability of beef production in Canada. The CRSB’s standards (production and processing) use an ‘outcome-based’ approach, meaning that the practices used to meet the individual indicators in the standards are what is measured, not prescribing the ways they must be achieved. This outcomebased model allows flexibility for the diverse ways beef demonstrates sustainability based on an individual operation, climate, region, soil type, production style, and more.

CRSB-approved Certification Bodies carry out third party auditing against CRSB standards and program requirements at all stages of beef production and processing, and for tracking beef through the supply chain, which enables consumer claims. There are three CRSB-approved Certification Bodies that can audit to the Sustainable beef production standard: VBP+, Where Food Comes From, and Ontario Corn Fed Beef, providing choice for the individual operation. We know that many producers already employ the sustainable practices set out in the standards, and this system helps verify them. The Certification Bodies assist producers in identifying areas for improvement and preparing for a certification audit.

Setting Ambitious 2030 Goals for the Canadian Beef Industry

The past year has been marked by intensifying coverage regarding sustainability and climate change, and the role of beef and the food system. The Canadian beef industry knows it has a vital role to play as a solution for climate change and continues to demonstrate its sustainability leadership. Through collaborative initiatives regionally, nationally and globally, the beef industry has been working on establishing robust 2030 goals that are practical, yet ambitious, and demonstrate our collective intention to make continual progress.

Marketing Sustainability

Demand for beef from CRSB Certified farms and ranches is strong, and currently outstrips supply – companies are also making sourcing commitments; to meet those commitments and demand, we need more CRSB Certified beef producers. To qualify for a CRSB Claim, cattle and beef must travel through CRSB Certified operations at every stage in the chain. When you market your cattle, promote them as CRSB Certified, and wherever possible, be sure to connect to a Certified Operation at the next stage in the supply chain. In Canada, through the seven national organizations that form the Canadian Beef Advisors, a suite of ambitious tenyear goals has been developed across seven key topics areas. These goals address achieving continual improvement in how cattle are raised, the importance of livestock production for climate change mitigation, supporting communities, embracing innovation, and the overall sustainability of our food system. They build on the National Beef Strategy and address improvements in reducing greenhouse gases and sequestering carbon; conserving land use and biodiversity; improving water and soil quality; best practices in animal health and care; supporting health and safety of people; improving beef quality and food safety, and embracing technology to improve efficiencies. The goals include opportunities, robust action items and timelines, and we will need to work together to achieve them. These initiatives show the collective commitment of the beef sector to continual improvement, and the importance of agriculture in a sustainable food system. Sustainability is a hot topic right now, and climate change is certainly top of mind for many. We know that consumers are concerned about how their food choices may affect the environment, and it is our job to make sure they know we are doing the right thing and are committed to continually improving. Being involved in the CRSB’s certification program is one way to help show your sustainable practices are making a difference.

Congresso Ganadero de las Estrellas

ongresso Ganadero de las Estrellas (Livestock Congress of the Stars) was held at Cortijo Los Fernandez Tonala, Jalisco Mexico March 23-27, 2022. The event met all expectations in drawing some of the very best livestock from Northern Mexico and was combined with rodeo events and other activities including school tours, an artisan and craft show, and featured an international presence from four continents. Attending from Canada were Simmental CEO Bruce Holmquist, and Hereford CEO Stephen Scott, both representing Canadian Western Agribition. Myles Immerkar Angus CEO and Sheldon Kyle Angus President also attended, along with Leah Jones, Stacey Felkar and Arlindo Gomes who represented FarmFair International. While there, we met with Government of Canada trade representatives from the Guadalajara office. The Canada/Mexico trade relationship is a strong and vibrant one, especially in beef cattle genetics, and has been facilitated through joint Government and industry efforts. The Fernandez and Ramirez families hosted and were the main organizers of this event which had a very strong Canadian genetic influence throughout many of the beef breeds. This included many of the divisional winners as well as several in the various Championship drives.

2022

A feature of the week was the evening sale that attracted a very large crowd and featured a Simmental bull of Canadian genetics that was the lead-off lot and sold for $9000.00 Cdn. Throughout the show Canadian Western Agribition presented some of their 50th Anniversary buckles to the Simmental, Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, Limousin and Charolais Champion Male and Female. These were a huge hit and were accompanied by a written invitation that was presented to each owner. Two of the Canadians attending served as judges for the shows with Sheldon Kyle judging the Charolais show and Bruce Holmquist serving as one of the three judges of the Supreme Championship along with judges from the United States and Mexico in a true USMCA effort. The success of this inaugural event has laid the groundwork for future shows and should grow in popularity. While this was an opportunity to showcase Mexican agriculture and livestock production it was rewarding to see that Canada continues to maintain a strong presence in that production and it is important to offer our support and assistance to this event. Prominent Industry Leaders Inducted into Canadian Simmental Association Hall of Fame Ralph Whitfield started his career in pharmacy upon graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1952. Ralph’s energy, work ethic, generosity, humility, and sense of humour have no limits. A farm boy whose family lost their Boissevain-area farm in the Depression, Ralph realized a lifelong dream to raise cattle when he bought his first parcel of farm land in 1969 and named it Woodsong to honour the family of Captain Gilbert Wood, one of the first families to settle the Souris area. He bought his first cows – Herefords - from Bob Rose, Bunclody, MB. Later, Bob Gordon as purchasing agent on Ralph’s behalf, bought thirty bred half-blood Simmental heifers from Arnold Bros. in South Dakota. Ralph then bought thirty bred half-blood Simmental heifers from Lucien Cancade, Pipestone, MB. Woodsong’s first herdsire was GR Napoleon Image owned with Gordon Bros., Bob and Wayne Gordon. Ralph was then a partner in the purchase of Achilles Golden Jet with All Star Breeders: Gordon Bros., Senkbeil Bros., Bob Duncan, and Bobby Hull. The first fullblood bull raised on the farm was Woodsong Leader 2K, son of Achilles Golden Jet. On the advice of Dolphe Henuset, Ralph and son Rod travelled to Switzerland and chose two bulls from the Simmen Valley. The following year, Dolphe and Ralph jointly imported another bull from Switzerland. Later, Woodsong Farms purchased with Mar Mac Farms, Bushwacker and Fisch Pilot. Ralph purchased 116 bred and open females from Roger River Ranches in the early 90’s. This started a new era in the Woodsong breeding program. These females had some Fleckvieh influence and with the purchase of several new herdsires, Woodsong began to show a real presence in the show ring as well as the sales ring. By 2005, Woodsong was home to one of Canada’s larger herds of fullblood Simmentals, breeding over 400 fullblood females and calving approximately 350 (50 fall and 300 Jan./Feb.). A bull sale was held every spring at the farm and for several years a fall female sale was held as well. Ralph enjoyed marketing his sales and the breed with his famous TV and radio ads and descriptive sale titles and catalogues. Woodsong participated in many other sales and sold packages by private treaty locally, across Canada and internationally. Woodsong cattle were sold to destinations in Brazil, Japan, Venezuela, United States and Mexico. Semen was sold to destinations in Australia and England.

Ralph judged cattle shows in Canada, Colombia and Brazil. He was a Director of the Manitoba Simmental Association and served on the board of the Canadian Simmental Association for six years, including as CSA President in 1988-89. In 1999, Ralph was honoured to be presented with the A.O. (Dolphe) Henuset Memorial Distinguished Service Award by the Manitoba Simmental Association “to persons who have unselfishly given of their time to help establish the Simmental Industry in Manitoba”. On October 22, 2006 , after 41 years in the Simmental business, Woodsong held a complete herd dispersal sale at Heartland Livestock Services in Virden, . This was a difficult but necessary decision for Ralph, following an encounter between his truck and an unmarked train stopped at an unmarked crossing on a foggy, icy, dark morning in January 2006. In the years following, Ralph and Averill sold the machinery and farmland and adapted to retirement, promoted the heritage of Souris and Glenwood, and enjoyed their home and family. On September 29, 2021, Ralph was inducted into the Canadian Simmental Association Hall of Fame “In Recognition of Dedication and Commitment to Canadian Simmental – 2020”. This honour, presented by Ralph’s long-time friends and associates Bill Biglieni, Blair McRae and Kim Warburton, continues to bring joy to Ralph and Averill and their family. Ralph and Averill, sons Rod, and Chris (deceased 2008), daughters Daphne, and Pam – acknowledge with appreciation the friendships forged with so many wonderful people in the Simmental industry over the years: Herd Managers: Kim and Sheree Warburton and family, Ron and Debbie Robinson, George and Judy Davies and family. Prominent Industry Leaders Inducted into Canadian Simmental Association Hall of Fame

The Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Board of Directors, on behalf of its membership, is very pleased to announce that wellknown industry leader and the Association’s General Manager, Mr. Bruce Holmquist has been inducted into the Canadian Simmental Association Hall of Fame. Bruce is a third-generation cattle producer who has spent his entire life in agriculture. In 1977, at the age of 16, Bruce began his own seed stock business when he purchased his first Simmentals. Over the years his herd expanded under the name of Spruce Grove Simmentals. In 1991, Angus genetics were added to the business and the name was changed to Spruce Grove Cattle Company. During those years Bruce traveled extensively promoting not only the Spruce Grove breeding programs but also the Canadian beef cattle industry as a whole through exhibiting and judging cattle across Canada. In 2000 Bruce was first elected as a director of the Canadian Simmental Association serving in various capacities culminating in serving as President from 2005-2006. Following his service as a board member he joined the CSA staff in charge of industry and member relations, later moving to the position of General Manager. In addition to the CSA, Bruce has played an active role in the Saskatchewan Simmental Association, Canadian Western Agribition, Canadian Beef

Breeds Council, Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association, Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, Regina Bull Sale, Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, International Council for Animal Recording, Beef Improvement Federation, and the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation. “Through his vast involvement and contributions, Bruce has worked diligently on behalf of, not only Canadian Simmental breeders, but the entire beef industry,” states CSA President Marlin Leblanc. “His commitment to the Canadian beef industry has advanced beef production not only in Canada but around the world.” The Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Hall of Fame recognizes past or present Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) members who have contributed to the growth and advancement of the Simmental breed in Canada. The recipients of this award are chosen by their fellow breeders who comprise the CSA Board of Directors.

Agnes Evelyn Small (Ries) passed away peacefully in Indian Head, at the Golden Prairie Nursing Home on Sunday, March 12, 2022 at the age of 93. Agnes was pre-deceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Bill; her devoted daughter Susan Hubbs; son-in-law Les Hubbs; cherished parents Lawrence and Sophie Ries; sisters Edith (Otto) Posehn; Mary (Henry) Miller; and 2 brothers in infancy. Left to cherish her memories are her daughter Laura (Don) Spence and son Ken (Grace) Small. Her grandchildren Jeff Spence (Vicki); Angela Spence (Mark); Seann (Nasha) Spence; Laurie (Mike) Heisler; Garrett (Jackie) Small and Dustin Small. Her 11 great-grandchildren Tyson (Danielle); Jackson; Abby; Becca; Kyle; Aleska; Gabriella; Asher; Ezra; Madison and Bailee. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Evelyn (Sam) Small and numerous nieces and nephews.

Garnet Samuel Fisk, beloved husband of the late Iris Elizabeth Fisk, of Moosomin, passed away at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre - Long Term Care on Sunday, February 13th, 2022 at the age of 95 years. Garnet was born to Henry and Elizabeth Fisk, he was the 10th child born of 11 children. He was the last surviving child of Henry and Elizabeth. Garnet married Iris Elizabeth Moran on May 2, 1953. Garnet farmed near Kelso, Sk., grain and Simmental cattle. He was involved in the Crossroads Simmental Association and the Fairmede Ag Society. He moved to Moosomin in May of 1992. Garnet was predeceased by his wife Iris Elizabeth and daughter Vicki and is survived by his children Sharon Williams, Gordon and Linda Fisk, Garth and Audrey Fisk, Rodney and Alfa Fisk. As well as 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, and sister-in-law Edna Fisk.

Laurent Maguet, the distinguished founder of Rendezvous Farms from the well-known Manitoba pedigreed livestock & grains operations has passed away. He was 95. Laurent Maguet married Lorraine Cancade from Pipestone, MB. On October 08, 2021 Laurent and Lorraine celebrated 72 years of married life together. Over his career Laurent was a proficient cattleman, farmer, auctioneer, realtor, purebred and sales manager. Laurent was born on August 13, 1926 and passed away on February 23, 2022. Lorraine (97) was admitted to hospital 41 hours after her husband Laurent, and both were then in the same hospital room to spend their last hours together as husband and wife. Laurent graduated from a distinguished auction academy in Decatur, Illinois. A few years later, he became a member of the Canadian and Manitoba Real Estate Associations and at one time was the only licensed auctioneer and Laurent and Lorraine Maguet real estate broker in Manitoba. Laurent could easily adapt from mixed agriculture to real estate sales, to cattle showmanship, to fencing, and to auctioneering at his numberless farm auction sales. Perhaps this flexibility was the key to his many achievements. Laurent’s spirit, knowledge, experience and understanding of the pedigreed livestock world will be missed. Laurent and Lorraine leave their children in mourning: Jean-Marie (deceased) Jeannine (Marcel Massicotte) Richard (Pauline Tardiff) Valérie. Their grandchildren: Ryan Simpkins, Leanne Simpkins (deceased), David (Rachelle), Brigitte (John), Gérald (Kajsa) Their great-grand-children: Kelly, Lewis, Tom, Cole, Jack, Lexi, Charles, Philippe.

Sunday, March 19th, 1944 - Thursday, April 21st, 2022 Ross Philip Small of Harriston passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday April 21, 2022 in his 79th year. Loving husband of Betty (Ross) Small. Father of David Small of Minto; Lee-Ann and Brian Sutherland of Aberdeen, Scotland; Dennis and Jeanne Small of Markerville, Alberta; and Ben and Sarah Small of Glencoe. Beloved Papa of Michael, Katherine, Joseph, Nathan, Monica and Rebekah Small. Ross will be remembered for his passion for family, farm and community. He was very proud of the four children he and Betty raised and ensured the farm they built known as ‘Dora Lee’ was a haven of laughter, tranquility and meaningful work. The Dora Lee prefix became known internationally to represent top quality cattle and swine genetics. He had a passion for Fullblood Fleckvieh Simmental Cattle. In his younger years, Ross was very active in the community, including work with Harriston United Church, organizing ‘Sportsmen’s Dinners’ to raise funds for the Teviotdale Ball Diamond, adding a Simmental Show to the Harriston Minto Fall Fair, as well as giving countless hours as a Director of Ontario Pork, the Canadian Pork Council, and the Ontario & Canadian Simmental Associations. Later in life, Ross enjoyed more of his time at home on the farm, and travelled to Europe, Australia and across North America to meet other Fleckvieh breeders. He loved helping his children, sharing family stories, a good joke and watching movies together. He enjoyed ‘daffodil hill’ in the spring, autumn colours and regular outings to ‘St Timothy’s’ (Tim Horton’s). His wisdom, humour and deep love for his family will be sorely missed.
